How Fraction Math Works

Adding and Subtracting Fractions

To add or subtract fractions, you must find a common denominator. The formula for adding two fractions without finding the lowest common denominator first is:

ab+cd=ad+bcbd\frac{a}{b} + \frac{c}{d} = \frac{ad + bc}{bd}

(The same formula applies to subtraction, just replace the ++ with a -).

Multiplying Fractions

Multiplication is the easiest fraction operation. Simply multiply the numerators together and the denominators together:

ab×cd=a×cb×d\frac{a}{b} \times \frac{c}{d} = \frac{a \times c}{b \times d}

Dividing Fractions

To divide fractions, you multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second fraction (flip the numerator and denominator):

ab÷cd=ab×dc=adbc\frac{a}{b} \div \frac{c}{d} = \frac{a}{b} \times \frac{d}{c} = \frac{ad}{bc}

Simplification

After the initial calculation, fractions are often simplified by finding the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) of the numerator and denominator and dividing both by it. Our calculator does this automatically for you!
