Tipping Etiquette

While tipping culture varies by country, in the United States, tipping is customary for service-based industries (like restaurants, salons, and food delivery).

• 15%: Minimum for average service.
• 18%: Standard for good service.
• 20%: Standard for excellent service (This is our calculator's default).
• 22% - 25%: For exceptional, above-and-beyond service.

The Math Behind the Split

Calculating the tip and the split is a straightforward two-step process:

1. Find the Tip Amount: $\text{Tip} = \text{Bill Amount} \times \left( \frac{\text{Tip \%}}{100} \right)$
2. Find the Split: $\text{Cost per Person} = \frac{\text{Bill Amount} + \text{Tip}}{\text{Number of People}}$

Splitting Fairly

This calculator assumes an even split, which is perfect for groups sharing appetizers and similar mains. If one person ordered a $50 steak and another ordered a$12 salad, it may be more appropriate to calculate individual totals rather than splitting the bill evenly!
